چکیده

Due to the fact that high datarate has shorter transmission range, the benefit of using high datarate may be degraded for IEEE 802.11 based multihop ad hoc networks. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of multihop ad hoc networks at multirates, in terms of the number of hops between source and destination, throughput, and end-to-end delay. Through simulations carried out in chain topology, we find that there is almost no benefit by applying the highest datarate 11 Mbps in 802.11b when the chain length is 6 hops or more. With node mobility in mesh topology, the benefit of using high datarate diminishes at even fewer hops. In order to better understand the reasons for this performance degradation at high datarate, analyses on end-to-end throughput in multihop networks and k-connectivity are carried out later in the paper.

The Utility of Hello Messages for Determining Link Connectivity

Future wireless applications will take advantage of rapidly deployable, self-configuring multihop ad hoc networks. Because of the difficulty of obtaining IEEE 802.11 feedback about link connectivity in real networks, many multihop ad hoc networks utilize hello messages to determine local connectivity. This paper uses an implementation of the Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing proto...

Mobile Internet Router for Multihop Ad hoc Networks

Future wireless ad hoc networks will use mobile routers to provide Internet connectivity to mobile ad hoc users. A mobile router also allows mobility of an entire ad hoc network, e.g. in plains, trains, cars, and other vehicles, where mobile users may use an Internet access within an ad hoc network domain. Mobile Internet access is also required for various mobile networks such as Personal Area...

Does the IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol Work Well in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks?

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is the standard for wireless LANs; it is widely used in testbeds and simulations for wireless multihop ad hoc networks. However, this protocol was not designed for multihop networks. Although it can support some ad hoc network architecture, it is not intended to support the wireless mobile ad hoc network, in which multihop connectivity is one of the most prominent f...

Analysis of IEEE 802.11b/g Card Behavior in Multirate Ad-hoc Networks

In multirate ad-hoc networks, mobile stations usually adapt their transmission rates to the channel conditions. This paper investigates the behavior of IEEE 802.11b/g cards in a multirate ad-hoc environment. WLAN network cards from different vendors are analyzed. The theoretical upper bound estimation of the throughput in multirate ad-hoc networks is derived. The measurement scenarios and obtai...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
